Final Piece - Life Drawing

This is my final piece for the life drawing module, this sketch took 15 minutes to complete and is a highly detailed sketch of  the life model stretched out on to a mat, this is a well proportioned sketch and has high levels of shading on it so you can see all the shadow from the light and also the detail in the back, arms and legs. This sketch offers a very close interpretation of the pose and position the model was in.

This is a successful sketch because it uses shading to create a illusion of 3D in the sketch and a sense of distance from the arms and legs on the mat. The detail in this sketch offer good shape in the arms and back and allows you to see the creases and line seen in the sketch.

Week 12 - Posture and Pose

In the last session of this semester we looked at pose and posture again but this time it was in more detail and also we were looking at the context of both natural posture and natural pose. This is a closer look at posture which is balance and weight in the poses of the model. Also we looked at pose which is the gesture of the model which we have focused on already.

The first drawing I did was a very quick sketch, it wasn't very successful but it did offer a good idea on the models pose as seen in the back and the head. It also showed the basic gesture of the model and the weight of the pose.

The second sketch I did was a slightly longer 5 minute one, this focused on posture and pose again. I managed to show the weight in the sketch fairly well and as you can see most of the weight is in the legs and back. The arched back sloping shoulders show off the posture of this sketch well, the proportion is a bit of but it still shows good balance and weight.

By including the spine it is easy to see how the body was supposed to lean forward and the arms were supposed to rest on his knees. improvement could be made but still it is better than the first sketch and still overs some gesture and weight.

The last sketch I did was the longest sketch I did and I went back to using pencil which allowed me to get very good shape in the muscles and in the rest of the body. The proportions of this drawings are very good and the detail on the muscles in the legs, back and arms are pretty accurate.

The weight is slightly off in this sketch the model is supposed to be leaning more on his leg but the drawing still shows good balance and detail.

Week 11 - Life Drawing Musculature

In this weeks study we looked at musculature in life drawing, musculature looks at how the muscles in our body fit together and which muscles we can see externally when we look at the anatomy of a human. These muscles can seen differently depending on the persons body mass and also if certain muscles have been worked to be made larger. They can also so been seen differently when certain strenuous activities are taken place like lifting, running and crouching.

The first drawing I did was a long 20 minute observational drawing which was based on getting the impression of weight and muscle. This sketch shows good weight as the model is lent forward and resting on his knee, it also is in good proportion and shows off the legs, shoulder and bicep muscles.
This drawing overs good shape to the body and looks realistic.

The next sketch is a quick sketch but I used charcoal to do it, I found charcoal to be less accurate at
getting body shape but it is far more expressive and allows greater detail and more fluid lines. This sketch focuses more on the detail of the muscles on the back of the body and also how they flex when a pose is struck.

This sketch shows good detail on the shoulders, shoulder blades, lower back and bottom areas. It also overs a accurate account of the models pose even though the proportions are slightly off. This sketch shows a good amount of body shape which allows us to see where the muscles are placed on the body.

The next sketch was a 10 minute sketch still using charcoal but this time I focused on capturing this complex pose and also the weight in which is displayed in this sketch. This was also a test to see how much detail I could include into the drawing in the space of time I had.

This sketch shows a very good sense of weight as it shows the model leaning forward with the weight on his legs and arms. It also shows good proportions and the pose is show effectively, the detail allows use to see the shape of some muscles in the legs and arms as this is the main area where weight is applied.

The last sketch was a 15 minute sketch that was just to focus on the bodies muscular detail on the torso area, the charcoal allowed me to include a lot of detail and shading in to this sketch. This sketch captured a lot of very fine detail in the shoulders and chest, also on how the shoulders connected to the arms.

This allows you to see the ribs, pecks, neck muscle and stomach muscle in lots of detail and this gives a good impression on how the muscles are connected in the body. The proportions of this sketch a very close to the real thing.

Week 10 - Life Drawing Movement

This week we still focused on life drawing but specifically on capturing the movement of the human form. It is difficult to capture someone in a movement posse because it requires you to think about the weight and movement in the scene whilst your drawing. To begin we first did some quick 30 second gestural drawings so that we could get an impression of what movement is being conveyed in each posse.

We did a number of 30 second sketch's on one page which allowed use to compare them, as you can see my first attempts at this type of drawing weren't very good but you can still see definite movement in the sketch's and a sense of weight in each one. This exercise was to just get a general gesture of each posse nothing more.

The second set of drawings I did were 2 minute drawings which allowed us more time to focus on the the proportions of the model as well as still capturing the movement in each posse. In these sketch's you can see that the model is a lot more in proportion and that there is a very good sense of movement and body torsion which shows in my sketch's, this adds to the impact and the sense of movement you get when looking at these sketch's.

Another thing you can see by looking at these sketch's is that the anatomy and shape of the model are improved and the are looking at least human. Although improvement could be made in terms of detail but these are good two minutes sketches.

My next sketch is another motion posse sketch but this time I had 5 minutes to draw the posse. I focused on the posture, posse, action and weight of the model. I tried to use continuous lines to bring out the bodies shape and also the curves like the hips and the shoulders, I also measured to great a good sense of proportion with how far his hands were held above his head and how long his arms were.

I added a bit of detail to this sketch so that it was easy to tell how in proportion the limbs were to the rest of his body, this helped me to create a fairly accurate interpretation of how the model stood and also the weight in his shoulders and legs. The only thing was a table covered his legs so it was impossible to see how wide his stance was and which leg carried the most weight.

The last drawing I did was a longer 8 minute sketch which focused on the upper half of the model. This allowed me to focus on detail in terms of proportion and weight, I also included detail to emphasis how the model was stood and what he was doing.

The overall shape and proportion is very good in this drawing and it is easy to see how the limbs were positioned in this sketch. The lines of the body really help to show off the features of the model like his shoulders, hips and ribs.

Week 9 - Life Drawing Basic Anatomy

This week we focused on life drawing but more importantly basic anatomy, human anatomy is difficult to get right when drawing the naked form and takes practise, to draw the anatomy of a person you most first focus on the models skeleton and the size of each bone and limb then the flesh is added.

I started by doing some very quick sketches to get warmed up I focused on getting down the models shape and the basic proportions of everything on the body, the proportions were slightly off in these sketches but it does give a good idea on shape and the posse of the model.

Secondly I did some more quick sketches but this time I included the spine of the model which helped to get the proportions a bit more accurate and also to get the twist of the body correct. I also used more fluid, continuous lines to show off the models natural curves and to show the bodies shape.

An improvement has been made in these drawings the proportions are a lot closer and also the curves of the body and spine are displayed more fluently. Some aspects still needed work but it is a good attempt for 1 minute sketches, it offers the basic shape and size of the model.

I then did a 2 minute compression drawing which allowed me to focus in more detail on getting the proportions and also the shape of body more accurate. As you can see the sketch is a lot more in proportion and shows off the models shape closely, The continuous lines helped to show the flow of the body and also how the flesh hangs off the skeleton of the model.

I included some features of the model like hands and the feet to see how the whole anatomy of the model was being portrayed in this sketch. This sketch was a lot closer to the real anatomy of the model and shows her shape very well.

Lastly I did a long 15 minute sketch to focus on the detail of the body and also how the weight is distributed when she is sat down, this time it allowed me to get the proportions and the shape of the body a lot closer. A good amount of detail has been included in this sketch and you can see how the spine curves and also how the body fits on to her skeleton.

The anatomy for this sketch is a lot better and is more normal, also the weight and posse can be seen easily. shading has been added to show of detail on the body like the back and the bottom and head.

Final Piece - Still Life

This is my Final piece for the still life module, it is a still life sketch of a Jack Daniel's bottle on a wooden table with a textured mat under it and a light shone onto the table. In the this sketch I have focused on a lot of detail, shadows, shading, textures, proportion and reflection. This sketch took me an hour and thirty minutes to do.

As you can see the texture of the table is very detailed and it is possible to see the gains in the wood, it has also been shaded to see the darker and light pieces of wood and where the shadow falls. The mat on which the bottle sits on has been textured and also the lines which decorate the mat have been carefully angled to create a realistic effect. The bottle has lots of very small detail on it and also shading on how the light has hit the bottle and the show it has created on the table.

Week 8 - Reflective Surfaces

This week we have been looking at Reflective surfaces, this focuses on light, reflection and refraction. Theses three factors have to be taken in to account when drawing objects that are shiny, glass or reflective, light can make these objects look different depending on how the light reflects off that object. In this 45 minute sketch I focused on detail, reflections, refractions and also light.

This sketch shows different types of shading and texture for each object, you can see that the glass bottle to the far left of the sketch in glass and has water in it which refracts the image seen through the glass. The jug laid on its side in the sketch is a reflective surface and is reflecting some of the environment back. The tin to the left is well lit and you can see lots of detail on it.

Week 7 - Texture

The focus of this week was texture, surface textures are difficult to define and have many different variations of each type of texture, it also depends on the artist's own experience on drawing these textures. I broke a A4 piece of paper down into 6 different texture comparisions that included 12 textures.

I then recreated  both soft and hard textures to see the difference between them and also how you would recreated them in a still life drawing with lots of textures in it. Shading is important here because the darker the shading the harder the surface looks. It was important to include detail but not too much because these textures need to be quick to recreate so you don't spend hours doing them.

The second set of texture comparisions I did were more softer textures and were a lot more difficult to recreate, by doing this type of texturing you can aproximate just about any texture without wasting too much time focusing on every little detail.

Textures like skin and wood are diffeicult to recreate well because there is a lot of very small detail that you need to empisise in your drawings but not spend too much time on it. So it is difficult to decide to either go for detail or focus on getting a approximation of that certain texture.

Week 6 - Still Life

This week we moved on to still life, we had to focus on drawing a placement of objects on a surface, we had to take into account the objects position on the surface and make sure that objects didn't kiss each other and also that the proportion of each object is correct in comparison to each other.

I started with a quick two minute sketch to get a good sense on the composition of the objects on the table, this sketch shows a good sense of proportion of each object and also the positioning of the objects on the table. This sketch uses smooth, rounded, curved lines to show the shape and curve of each object.

My second sketch was another composition sketch but this time it was some different objects this sketch in a improvement because none of the objects are kissing and also the they are all in proportion and the ellipses are improved and have no points on them. This sketch also shows the relationship between the objects and the surface they are placed on.
This is one of my still life sketch's that I set up at home, it consists of three candles placed on a table with chair in the background. This 10 minute sketch shows how each object is positioned next to each other and also how they sit on the table, this sketch gives a good sense of proportion and placement.

This sketch uses the big candle as its focal point and draws the eyes towards it, the perspective of this sketch is close up and the positioning of the chair and table give the sketch a 3D effect. The amount of detail included in this sketch makes it easy to see what each object is and also the material they are made of, the big candle is wood and the smaller ones are clear glass.

This is another still life sketch I set up in my house, this one is of  the big wooden candle and also a small glass cup. This sketch looks at the objects in more detail and picks up on the candles wood texture and shading, also attention has been paid to the detail on the surface that the objects are sitting on and the way in which these objects are positioned on the table.

There is good proportion in the sketch with the size of the candle compared to the size of the glass and also the length of the table they are sitting on.  Its is easy to see the relationship between these two objects in this sketch.

This last sketch is a 10 minute still life sketch of a lantern and a glass candle, this drawing focuses on the shading on each object and also the different materials seen in the sketch. The shading makes it easier to see the difference between the different materials on the lamp and on the the table the objects are resting on. The table is made of wood and you can see the grain in the sketch and also there is a mat on the table which the object are sitting partly on.

Lighter and darker shading helps to see the where the light is hitting these objects and also the darkness in colour in the different materials on both objects. The proportions are good in this sketch and the sizes are correct.

Final Piece - Landscape Draw

This is my final piece for the landscape drawing module, this is a 45 minute sketch of my back garden I choose to draw in a portrait perspective because it offered a lot more dimension and detail to the sketch. I mainly focused on detail and shading, the different shading techniques I used help to determine between the lighter and darker areas of this sketch and also the different materials that are involved in this sketch.

I paid a attention to both for-ground and back-ground elements in this sketch making sure that objects further back were smaller and less detailed and the objects close to me were bigger and more detailed. I also focused greatly on the proportions of the sketch making sure that the plans buildings and other aspects were in proportion to the rest of the scene.

Week 5 - Landscape

In this week we focused on landscape drawing, we looked at many different landscapes and also the different perspectives that can be seen in each landscape. This landscape sketch is a urban landscape drawing of my back garden. I chose to use a portrait perspective to pick up all the detail that was included in this small section of my garden.

I used close measurements to get all the aspects of this sketch almost exactly like the real thing, the sloping lines to the side of the sketch gives the drawing an illusion of a third dimension. The shading in this sketch helps to determine between the darker materials in the sketch and also the soil.

Week 4 - Light and Shadow

In week four we focused on light and shadow, we focused on directional light and also the shadows that these lights cast on objects like the chairs and cloth seen in the sketch above. This sketch is a 45 minute sketch of a few chairs and tables with a cloth draped over them and the a number of different lights shone on to the scene to create shadow.

This sketch shows a great deal of depth in terms of the amount of shading and also the positioning of the vertical lines which form the chair legs which make this sketch look three dimensional, the use of different shading technique's gives the sketch life and light. The use of both thick and thin lines help to determine between different materials in the sketch and also the the lighter and darker sections.
This second drawing was a quicker 15 minute sketch that was done on the same chair and table set up but on another side of it. The use of curved lines in this sketch make the cloth look soft and also shows the greases seen in the sketch, the use of different shading techniques helps to differentiate between the lighter and darker shadows in this sketch. The darker lines show the darker folds in the cloth and also the dark gaps between the chair and cloth.

Week 3 - Compisition

In this week we focused on the composition of our prospective drawings, these sketches shows the different compositions found in the Richmond building on the university campus. The first sketch was of the lift found in the Richmond buildings eating area, this sketch shows great depth because it is easy to see that it is three dimensional, and also the tall vertical lines make the lift look tall and rigid.

The second sketch shows the stairs leading up to the second level of the Richmond building eating area, this sketch has good placement of of objects and also a good spacing between them because none of the objects are kissing. A 3D effect is given to this sketch by the placement of the horizontal lines which form the wall to the right of the sketch.
